10 Mistakes First-Time Cruisers Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Your first cruise is booked, congratulations! 🥳 Avoid these common first-time cruiser mistakes so you can step onto the gangway that leads us to the ship. There is nothing like that feeling, walking through that tunnel.
And there’s nothing quite like your first cruise. The excitement of boarding a floating resort, visiting new destinations, and spending quality time with family is unforgettable. But first-time cruisers often make a few common mistakes that can add stress, cost money, or cause them to miss out on the best parts of their vacation. Here are the biggest mistakes we’ve seen (and some we have made ourselves) — and how to avoid them.
1. ✈️ Arriving at the Port on Cruise Day
Many first-time cruisers fly in or travel to the port the same day their cruise departs.
Why it’s a mistake: Weather delays, traffic, and flight cancellations happen.
💡 Our Tip: Arrive at least one day before your cruise whenever possible.
2. 📄 Forgetting Important Documents
Nothing ruins a vacation faster than missing travel documents.
Double-check:
- Passports
- Birth certificates (if applicable)
- Cruise boarding documents
- Travel insurance information
3. 🧳 Packing Everything in Checked Luggage
Many new cruisers don’t realize luggage may not arrive at their cabin for several hours.
Keep these in your carry-on:
- Medications
- Swimsuits
- Sunscreen
- Chargers
- Travel documents
4. 🚢 Not Researching the Ship
Cruise ships are huge.
Many guests don’t discover:
- Kids clubs
- Specialty restaurants
- Hidden decks
- Activities included in the fare
💡 Our Tip: Download the cruise line app before sailing.
5. 👗 Overpacking
This is one we still laugh about.
Many first-time cruisers pack outfits for every possible situation.
Reality: Most people wear far less than they bring.
💡 Our Tip: Pack versatile clothing and leave room for souvenirs!
6. 🤢 Forgetting Motion Sickness Medication
Even if you don’t usually get motion sick, rough seas can surprise you.
Pack:
- Motion sickness tablets
- Ginger candies
- Sea bands
💡 Our Tip: Better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them!
7. 🎟️ Waiting Too Long to Book Excursions
Popular excursions can sell out months before sailing, so if there’s one you want to go on, book sooner!
Book early if:
- You’re traveling during school holidays
- You have specific excursions in mind
8. 💰 Ignoring Additional Costs
Your cruise fare covers a lot — but not everything.
Possible extras:
- Specialty dining
- Shore excursions
- Gratuities (even if you prepay — everything extra has additional tips. Drinks usually have an auto-gratuity, so watch your receipts!)
- Internet
- Drink packages
💡 Our Tip: Not a bad idea to create a budget before you sail! For more on this, check out our 5 Cruise Money-Saving Secrets.
9. 🗺️ Missing Embarkation Day Activities
Many guests only head straight to the buffet and miss opportunities to explore!
Embarkation day is the perfect time to:
- Tour the ship
- Reserve activities
- Learn the layout
10. 🏖️ Trying to Do Everything
This may be the biggest mistake of all!
Cruise ships offer endless activities, but you don’t need to do everything.
Some of our favorite cruise memories are simply:
- Watching the ocean
- Enjoying dinner together (we try to get to the main dining room as often as we can!)
- Relaxing on deck
Don’t forget to enjoy the vacation.
⏰ Our Embarkation Day Secret
Here’s an extra tip for embarkation day (the day you get on the ship) that we ALWAYS do:
Book the earliest check-in time! You get to enjoy the cruise just a little bit longer, and there are fewer people. One extra lunch? Yes, please! And if you’re in a warm climate and bring your bathing suit, all the cruises we’ve been on have the pool open — so the kids have been able to get the first splash in with minimal people.
💡 Our Tip: Your luggage won’t be in your stateroom yet, so be prepared with a suit in your carry-on.
🧳 A Few Things That Helped
A short list of small items worth packing based on the mistakes above:
- Motion sickness tablets, ginger candies, or sea bands — pack them even if you don’t think you’ll need them
- A carry-on with essentials — medications, swimsuit, sunscreen, chargers, and documents, so you’re never waiting on checked luggage
Our First Cruise Mistake You Can Avoid
When Kevin and I took our honeymoon cruise to Alaska aboard Celebrity Century, we packed far more than we needed and spent too much time trying to see everything. Over the years, we’ve learned that the best cruises aren’t about doing more — they’re about enjoying the experience and making memories together.
Every cruiser makes mistakes on their first sailing, and that’s part of the adventure. With a little preparation, you’ll spend less time worrying and more time enjoying your vacation.
